ABOUT CHRIS

I got fired in 2008.
That's how this started.

I was a BMW technician who couldn't keep his mouth shut about how the shop should be run. So they showed me the door. I started my own operation out of a gas station, on a week-to-week lease, with my wife answering the phones while I worked on cars. The Sprinters came in because they got filled with gasoline. Tire patches and routine maintenance. We found our building through a customer connection. We were making it up as we went.

Within a year, I had employees. That's when everything got hard. Then we had to relocate, and I spent the better part of 15 years in survival mode.

The Long Middle

I spent the better part of a decade doing what most shop owners do — solving every problem myself, keeping underperformers because I was afraid to recruit, grinding 50-60+-hour weeks, and wondering what was wrong with me. The business grew. I stayed trapped inside it.

In November 2014 I reached my bottom. Not a dramatic one — just the quiet kind where you look up and realize the work you thought would set you free has become a machine that runs on your stress. That night changed everything.

Recovery taught me what years of business coaching hadn't: that the real constraint isn't the team or the market or the economy. It's the patterns running underneath. The self-will. The control. The belief that if you just work harder and smarter, you'll finally get out in front of it.

The inner work is what made the operational work finally stick.

The Turn

When I learned to lead from my own ground — not from the books I'd read or the coaches I'd studied, but from what I actually believed — the shop changed. Not immediately. But it changed.

Star Motors European Service in San Juan Capistrano now runs close to half a million dollars a month with four production technicians. I'm rarely there. When I do show up, I have a plan, I execute it, and I leave. My team doesn't need me in the building. They need me to keep hunting, keep building, keep holding the vision.

That's the life I'm helping other shop owners build.

Beyond the Shop

I teach yoga and meditation. I've built nonprofits focused on workforce development for veterans and people coming out of incarceration. I travel — a lot, usually in business class on points I earned from running a good business. I'm finishing a Yoga Sutra commentary and writing other books.

I mention this not to impress you, but because it matters to the work: the path I'm describing actually leads somewhere. I'm not a shop owner who coaches shop owners. I'm someone who built the shop into something that funded a completely different kind of life — and now I help other people do the same.

The Owner’s Manual

Most people are handed the keys to a business — or a life — without the manual. The Owner's Manual is the guide Chris Knuth wishes he'd had: a practical, systems-first path from technician to true owner. Drawn from years of building from the ground up, it lays out the operating systems that create freedom instead of a second job — how to structure the work, lead without losing yourself, and build something that runs without running you into the ground.

It reads as a business book. It works as a transformation. The systems on the page are also a mirror — the way you run the shop is the way you run yourself. That's the quiet argument underneath every chapter, and the doorway to everything else in this body of work.
